What is a Schedule 40 Pipe Nipple?

These Schedule 40 pipe nipples meet or exceeds ASTM and ANSI Standards. We stock them from 1/8" through 6" diameters and are available in lengths up to 60 inches. For galvanized or black pipe applications include air, natural gas, non-potable water, oil and steam. These class 150 galvanized nipples are extremely rust-resistant due to their zinc-coated steel.Because of this, they are mainly used for outdoor and industrial applications. They can withstand tough weather conditions. Black pipe is not used outdoors.

A Schedule 40 galvanized pipe nipple is a short length of galvanized or black steel pipe that is threaded on both ends and used to connect two female-threaded fittings or devices together.

Its main purposes are to:

  • Extend a piping run
  • Join two fittings
  • Create spacing between components

Breaking Down the Name Schedule 40 and Characteristics

  • Refers to the wall thickness of the pipe
  • Strong enough for typical plumbing, gas, and mechanical applications
  • Nipple
  • Threaded on both ends (male threads)

What It’s Commonly Used For

  • Connecting two threaded fittings (like elbows, tees, couplings, valves)
  • Extending pipe out of a wall or floor
  • Spacing valves or fixtures away from a fitting
  • Water supply piping (where permitted by code)
  • Light-duty industrial and mechanical systems

Simple Example

You have a tee and need to install a ball valve onto it.
A pipe nipple screws into the tee, and the valve screws onto the nipple.

Important Notes

Many modern systems prefer copper, PEX, or CPVC for domestic water due to better long-term performance

Galvanized and black pipe is still common in repairs, mechanical rooms, and older buildings

Always use thread sealant or PTFE tape on threads

In Plain English

A Schedule 40 pipe nipple is used as a short connector piece that joins threaded parts together and helps position components exactly where you need them.
